What the BNR reference rate is

Every banking day, around 13:00 Romanian time, the National Bank of Romania publishes the reference rate of the leu against the main currencies: how many lei one unit of foreign currency is worth. For a few low-value currencies (for example the Hungarian forint or the Japanese yen) the rate is given per 100 units.

On weekends and public holidays no new rate is published, so the last published rate remains in force. The tool does the same: pick a day without a publication and it shows the rate from the last day one was published, and tells you which day that is.

BNR rates are often used in contracts ("payable in RON at the BNR rate on the invoice date") and for accounting and tax reporting of foreign currency transactions. Which day's rate applies depends on the contract clause or the tax rule in question.

The rates come from curs.bnr.ro through our server, because the BNR does not allow other websites to read them directly. The conversion happens in your browser, through RON, the way the BNR quotes it. This is not tax advice.

Worked example

If the BNR published 1 EUR = 5.0912 RON and 1 USD = 4.3701 RON, then 100 EUR = 509.12 RON, and 100 EUR = 509.12 / 4.3701 = 116.50 USD. The figures are only an illustration; the converter above uses the real rates for the date you pick.

Frequently asked questions

When is the BNR rate published?

On banking days, usually around 13:00 Romanian time. Before that, the tool shows the rate of the previous banking day.

Which rate applies on weekends and holidays?

The last published one, from the last banking day before that day.

Can I see the rate for a past date?

Yes, for any day from 3 January 2005. Pick it in the "Rate date" field.

Why are some currencies shown per 100 units?

For low-value currencies the BNR quotes the rate per 100 units to keep the decimals. The converter takes this into account automatically.
