Search by CUI

The check digit is verified in your browser. Only a valid CUI is sent to our server, which asks the ANAF register and returns the public data.

What the CUI is and how it is checked

The CUI (cod unic de înregistrare), also called the tax identification code (CIF), identifies a Romanian company towards the state. It has 2 to 10 digits; VAT registered companies use it with the RO prefix, which makes it their EU VAT number. The last digit is a check digit: the other digits are multiplied by the key 753217532 (right-aligned), the sum is multiplied by 10, and the remainder after dividing by 11 (10 counts as 0) must equal the last digit. That catches typing mistakes immediately.

What the ANAF register tells you

  • Name, registered office and trade register number, exactly as ANAF has them.
  • VAT payer: whether the company is registered for VAT, so whether its invoices should show the RO code.
  • VAT on collection and split VAT, which change when VAT can be deducted.
  • Inactive or deregistered taxpayer: expenses and VAT on purchases from an inactive taxpayer are generally not deductible in Romania (Fiscal Code, art. 11). Check partners before you sign or pay.
  • RO e-Factura register, as reported by ANAF. The register mattered mostly before 2024; since then e-Factura has been mandatory between businesses established in Romania.

We do not store lookups. The server keeps the ANAF answer in memory for at most 24 hours, so the ANAF service is not queried more than needed, and limits lookups per minute and per day. The data is what ANAF publishes; for official documents use a trade register certificate. This is not tax advice.

Worked example

For RO 14399840 the tool strips the prefix and spaces, checks the check digit (0) and shows the name, registered office, trade register number and VAT status. For 14399841 it answers at once that the check digit does not match, without asking ANAF.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the data come from?

From the public ANAF web service for checking taxpayers (the register of VAT payers). The data is what ANAF publishes on the day of the lookup.

Can I check companies from other EU countries?

No, this tool only checks Romanian tax IDs. For VAT numbers from other member states use the European Commission's VIES service.

Why is the company shown as inactive?

ANAF declares a taxpayer inactive when, for example, it does not file returns or cannot be found at its registered office. Until it is reactivated, partners generally cannot deduct expenses and VAT on purchases from it.

Is there a lookup limit?

Yes, to protect the ANAF service: 20 lookups a minute and 200 a day from the same connection. In ContractCube, partner details fill in automatically from the CUI.

Partners filled in from their CUI

In ContractCube you type a partner's CUI and the name, address and VAT number come from the ANAF register. Contracts, e-Factura invoices and deadlines then stay together for each partner.
